The Club has root back to 1897 and has been running in its current form since 1962.

David Chote, who was 16 years old when he joined, raced for over 70 years.

Dave said that Toby Edwards and Maurie Flemming were the organisers who worked out the handicap for the races and worked out the timing. Also involved were Jimmy and Bert Flemming.

Back then they brought a classroom up from Waipawa and set it up in Napier Road and that was the clubrooms. It is now the scout hall.

All races started and finished in Napier Road at the Club House.

They raced on grass track in Nelson Park, Hastings, and McLean Park in Napier. HB champs would alternate between each venue.

A lot of track riding back in the day.

Ramblers had a road race every Saturday. All races were handicapped.

3 clubs competed against each other – Greendale Club Taradale, HB Poverty Bay and Ramblers – they would ride from Gisborne through to Dannevirke, Gisborne, Wairoa, Taradale, Hastings, Waipukurau and Dannevirke.

Dave’s father, Bruce Chote, was the club president for while.

Dave told lots of stories – even about how they lost the Club building!
