RAMBLERS CYCLING CLUB – Saturday 25 September 2004
Andrew Townsend recorded the fastest average speed in the Club Individual Time Trials held from the Arohanui Christian Centre in Havelock North on Saturday. Cold, damp weather, combined with a strong southerly wind and a challenging rolling course out Middle Road and return, made conditions difficult for the 55 riders who registered.
In the Club’s Vet 1 men’s grade, Townsend recorded a time of 35m 03s over the25km course, averaging 42.8km/h in the process, to retain the club title. Kerry Harford was second in a time of 37m 45s with Patrick Kelly third in 38m 27s.
Peter Gavin just failed to break the 40km/h average mark in winning the Vet 2 men’s grade over 20km in a time of 30m 11s. Ken Tuniicliff, who is currently preparing for this years nationals, was 2nd in 31m 36 with Ian Wright 3rd in 33m 24s.
The Vet 3 men’s title went to Roy van Panhuys in a time of 31m 46s over the 20km. This pushed the defending champion, Dave Marett, into second place with his time of 34m 50s. Mick Cull was a further eleven seconds back in third place.
The fastest women’s time was recorded by the visiting Marguerite Ritchie who recorded a time of 33m 03s over 20km, an average speed of 36.3km/h. However, the Vet 1 women’s club title, also over 20km, went to Margaret Radich in a time of 34m 19s with Julie Williams second in 33m 03s. Susan Tunnicliff took out the 20km Vet 2 women’s title in 35m 20s from Shona Brown (35m 51s) with Rosemary Weskett third in 37m 48s. Gemma Newland retained her Senior Women’s title unopposed with a time of 48m 15s for the 25km course.
The Under 15 boys and girls raced over 10km with Sarah Watson winning the girls title in a time of 21m 06s from Kirstin Hartley who recorded 21m 31s. Austen Thomson proved too strong in the boys race to win in a time of 16m 35s with Sam Riddell 2nd in 18m 16s and Sean Joyce third in 18m 42s.
Sam Green recorded an average speed of 40.9km/h to easily win the Uner 17 boys event raced over 15km. Robert Collins finished 2nd in 23m 08s with Hamish Clark 3rd in 23m 57s with Karl Hartley just a further two seconds back in 4th place. To illustrate the improvement in this grade, last year, over an easier circuit, Green recorded a time of 23m 38s.
Andrew Fussell took out the Under 19 men’s 25km event unopposed in 48m 35s while Josh Page did the same in the Under 23 men’s event in a creditable time of 1hr 05m 12s.
In the 40km Senior Men’s event, Dan Warren retained his club title in a time of 1hr 03m 37s, heading off second placed Brett Ritchie by 1m 03s, with Gavin Povey third in 1hr 06m 27s.
Next weekends club racing is from Pukehamoamoa School on the hilly Crownthorpe X 2 (anti-clockwise) course.
