Time Trials 2005
1-10-2005

RAMBLERS CYCLING CLUB – Saturday 1 October 2005

Professional rider Jeremy Vennell produced the ride of the day to win the Ramblers Senior Individual Time Trial club championship held on Saturday. Despite a strong wind and the challenging Dartmoor Road and return course, Vennell, who has only recently returned to New Zealand from another season of European racing, recorded a time of 23m 27s for the 17.3km course, averaging over 44km/h in the process. Both Brett Ritchie and Dan Warren averaged over 40km/h but had to settle for second and third places respectively.

In the combined vet 1 and 2 grade, Andrew Townsend was slower out into the wind than in the August race held over the same course but powered home to improve his overall time and take the title with a time of 24m 26s, averaging 42.5km/h. Jason Kelly continued his build up for the National Championships later this month by securing second place with an average speed just under 41km/h and less than one minute behind Townsend. Ken MacKenzie struggled with the wind to record a time slower than his previous effort but still took third place. Kevin Burgess produced another superb ride for 4th place while last weeks road race winner, Mark Coombe, finished 5th. Kerry Harford was forced to abandon the event after suffering a frustrating mechanical problem off the start line.

Peter Gavin again showed his class to be the only other rider to crack the 40km/h plus average speed mark to win the vet 3 and 4 grade by 26 seconds from Ian Seddon. Despite Bruce Galloway improving his time from the August ride by 20s and David Joyce improving his time by 41s, these riders had to settle for third and fourth places respectively with Ian Wright finishing 5th.

The vet 5 plus grade again saw a good tussle between Roy van Panhuys and Ken Tunnicliff with both riders recording improved times from August. Van Panhuys proved to be faster on the day to win the club title by 28s from Tunnicliff. Allan Simpson was third with Derek Ward fourth with both riders showing improved times.

In the women’s vet 2 grade, Shona Brown was 1m 37s faster than her August time to win the title from club road race champion Susan Tunnicliff with Rosemary Weskett third.

Margaret Radich completed the road race / time trial club title double by winning the Vet 1 women’s race from Colleen Youngquest.

Gisborne’s Eric White showed his potential in recording a time of 27m 27s to win the under 17 boys title by almost two minutes from second placed Ali MacKenzie. Ben McFadyen was third with Jason Hurley fourth.

In the closest finish of the day, Jed Usherwood edged out Sean Joyce by a mere 4 seconds in the under 15 boys event. Rory MacKenzie finished third with the club road race title holder, David Kelly, finishing fourth.

Danielle Harford, after her wins last weekend of both the club and the NZ Schools Cycling Association national road race titles, added the club time trial title to her collection by recording a time over a minute faster than in August to pip Sarah Watson by just twelve seconds.

Kirsten Hartley took out the under 17 girls title, Gemma Newland won the Senior Women’s title and Josh Page secured the under 23 men’s title all unopposed.

Tom Warren, Josh Brannigan and Westley Gough were absent due to competing in the Junior under 19 tour held in Wanganui. This, and other competing events, saw a smaller than expected field of 73 riders register for racing.

In the under 19 men’s grade, Robert Collins bettered his August time by well over two minutes to win the title from second placed Hamish Clark who was over two minutes behind with Sam Green finishing a further 28 seconds back in third place.
