Over 110 riders raced in the Ramblers Cycling Club annual Dudley Hawke Memorial race on Saturday. This event is held in memory of Dudley Hawke, who was killed whilst out riding. As part of the Winter Series, A – D grades competed in this handicapped 50km race from Bridge Pa School to the top of Clarksons Hill and return. First club member across the finish line wins the Dudley Hawke Memorial Cup.
E, F and G grades had a separate handicapped race along Highway 50 to Salisbury Road and return.

Starting first, D grade had a three minute head start on C grade, with a further six minutes back to B grade, then A grade started last, 15 minutes after D grade.
With the large handicaps given to both A and B grades, both grades had to start hard and fast in order to overcome their respective time deficits. This fast pace saw riders getting dropped early and A grade was reduced to just 10 riders in the opening few kilometres.
Strong riding saw the leading A grade riders reach the front of the field on the return journey. Whilst Sean Joyce was first across the line in a time of 1 hour 14 minutes, he is not a club member. This meant that Dan Warren (2nd behind Joyce) took the trophy home yet again.

Next Saturday’s racing is a graded individual time from Ohiti Road on an out and return course.
