The Club's Winter Series continued on Saturday in ideal conditions. Over 130 riders registered to race from Puketapu School on the relatively flat Swamp/Omaranui/Dump course. A - D grades raced approximately 47km, E, F, G and Fem raced over the shorter Swamp/Dump course.
As the course is basically flat and ideally suited for sprinters, the finish line was placed at the top of the rise at the end of the Puketapu School straight, to try and break up the bunches. This had little effect however, with bunch finishes the order of the day and a number of riders recording identical times.

After a week of wet and cold weather, a large A grade field was champing at the bit and started racing well before the end of the designated controlled start area at the beginning of Swamp Road. This early start saw them pass F grade (which had started 2 minutes earlier) within a few kilometres of the start line.
A number of short lived breaks were shut down by the bunch until the second lap, when on the downwind stretch a disorganised bunch failed to react, thereby letting a group of riders go.
With riders failing to launch a chase, the lead riders worked together, finishing 50 seconds in front of the peloton.
Fraser Gough was credited with first place, ahead of fellow breakaway riders Blair Heney and Andrew Townsend.
Dean Clifford secured the C grade sprint with the same time as second placed Stephen Ford. They recorded a time of less than two minutes slower than their higher ranked B grade counterparts.
The ever present D grade rider Chris Macaulay showed the benefits of consistency. Despite finishing second to the fast finishing Fraser Marett, Macaulay secured the series leader yellow jersey for next week with his second placed finish.

Next Saturday's racing is the annual handicapped Dudley Hawke Memorial Race. This is held from Bridge Pa School, racing to the top of Clarksons Hill and return.
