In stark contrast to last weeks atrocious weather conditions, perfect conditions saw 90 riders compete in the Ramblers Cycling Club race held on Saturday. In a variation from the normal graded road racing, an Italian Pursuit was held from Crystall Road on the flat 5.75km Crystall Road - Middle Road - School Road - Mount Erin Road circuit.
In this race, the lowest graded rider had to lead the team around for a lap before dropping out at the end of the lap. Starting at 30 second intervals between teams, each team started with six riders and were thus reduced by one rider per lap until just the highest graded rider in each team was left to complete the last lap solo. Each team had to work together to encourage other members of their team to ride to the best of their ability. Riders who are more used to sitting in the pack were forced to work hard for a lap for the benefit of the team.
As each rider had to effectively ride a lap as an individual time trial and with no specialist time trial equipment allowed for this event, this allowed some of the lower graded riders to extend themselves and record impressive top speeds and averages which indicates they should move up a grade. Top speeds of over 40km/h were recorded for E & F graders as compared to A graders who recorded top speeds of over 50km/h.
With astute team combinations by the club’s race committee, this saw all teams record fast average speeds with the time difference between the first and last teams less than four minutes. The fastest team averaged just under 38km/h and was ridden home by Blair Heney with Bruce Herron, Sam Haslett, Bridget Keegan, Emma Buttle and John Hudson completing the earlier laps.

Next Saturday’s racing is a graded road race to be held from Puketapu School on the Swamp/Omaranui/Dump circuit.
