Ramblers used the challenging Apley Road circuit in mild winter conditions on Saturday,
starting from Dartmoor Road and racing anti-clockwise for 51km over two laps.
The A to D grade bunches were split apart by the race intensity and a number of riders
failed to finish.
Whilst a good sized field of over 120 riders registered for graded racing, it was visiting
rider Hugo Baldwin who had the ride of the day. Riding in sandshoes without the aid of
clipless pedals or modern bike technology, he showed E grade that it is the engine that
counts by dominating the race on an old model steel framed bike.
Baldwin made his move up the main Puketitiri Road climb to leave the peloton in his wake.
With the bunch not committing to a chase on the climb, he established a sizeable lead heading
back into Dartmoor Road.
However, the chase was 'too little too late' and Baldwin crossed the finish line well
clear of the main bunch. Unfortunately he did not carry a timing tag so his hard
ridden victory was not recorded. With the result of this ride, he will be looking to
extend himself into higher grades in future.
The B grade field, featuring 2010 New Zealand Junior World Championships
representative Ashleigh Neave, was broken apart by some strong riding. Six riders
went well clear of the field with this number being reduced as the race progressed.
Regan Gough proved to be the best rider on the day to finish 17 seconds clear of 2nd
placed Carl Fraser with Neave finishing midfield, over 10 minutes down on Gough.
Next Saturday's racing is from Bridge Pa School on the Aorangi Road and return
(Kemblefield) course.
