Race summary - Saturday 5th June 2010
Ideal weather for cycle racing and a hilly course saw over 100 riders register for racing held on Saturday from Haumoana School. The Winter Series opened with the A to D grades racing twice around the Tuki Tuki circuit, E, F and Fem grades completing one lap. G grade did three laps of the school block circuit (21km).

In A grade, a number of newly promoted riders struggled with the higher intensity. This was evident right from the start line. Gavin Povey however, returning to A grade after dominating the B grade for the last few weeks, relished the chance to stretch his legs and put his new Trek Madone 6.9 to the test. The fast pace soon saw the small bunch whittled down to just five riders, with Patrick Kelly losing contact on the second ascent of the notorious Coops Hill. Just four riders, (including Povey) were left to contend line honours. In the end, it was the 2010 Master 3 Nationals Silver Medallist 'Darryl Strachan' who comfortably took the win at just under a 42km/h average speed. Paul Langford was second, with Autumn Series winner Andrew Townsend third, Povey fourth.

Blair Heney produced a strong ride in B grade to win by over two minutes. Despite this impressive win, he was more than five minutes slower than the A grade bunch.
Most other grades saw sprint finishes determine the winner.

Next Saturday’s race is from Crystall Road on the Crystal Rd / Mutiny Road circuit.
