East Coast Club graded 2 day Tour
28/02/2010
Hot clear weather and dry roads were welcomed by the 94 riders who gathered over the
weekend of February 27th and 28th 2010 to contest the Ramblers Cycling Club graded
tour. Visitors from Cycling Central Hawkes Bay and Gisborne Cycling Club strengthened
the competition in this event, which is designed to deliver even competition to
cyclists of any age or ability.
The event consisted of 3 stages, a points race, a road race and an individual time
trial and was ridden in good spirit but keenly contested by all grades. The road race
stage was held on the Crownthorpe circuit, this course is being used to host this
years Club National Championships on the 29th April to the 2nd of May this year.
There were standout performances over the two days of racing and many riders who had
never before tested themselves by undertaking such an event showed their mettle and
determination by completing all stages.
In the Hub Cycle Centre A Grade, U23 rider Sean Joyce dominated the event by winning
all the stages. The Hub Cycle Centre's Dan Warren came second with another talented
and rapidly improving young rider, Jeremy Stevens in third place.
Langley Twigg B Grade was dominated by Scott Estcourt who won stages 1 and 2 but had
to settle for 2nd place in the ITT which was won by former National Champion Ashleigh
Neave. Second place was taken by Paul Mills and third went to Rob Menefy.
Grant White Autobody C Grade was closely contested and Junior rider James Lochead
gave warning of things to come by winning from Gavin Scoble (who was dominant in the
ITT), Lee Wilson rode strongly to take 3rd place.
Atkins Signs and Graphics D Grade was won by David Barclay from junior Lee Simpson
with a strong all round performance from Toni Hoskin giving her 3rd place.
Pedal Power E Grade was won by another youngster on the way up, Mike Garrity. Mike
who has only been riding for a short time is one to watch in the future. Veterans
Lindsay Sheppard came second and the evergreen Dave Marrett was 3rd.
Marewa Epic Cycles F Grade was won by CHBs President, Tim MacKie, who pushed himself
to the limit and achieved because of it. David Marsh came 2nd over Tim Barclay 3rd
because although they were even on points, Marsh had the faster ITT.
Avanti Plus Fem Grade was won by Sue Grundy who rode strongly throughout the Tour,
Annie Koevoet of Gisborne came 2nd.
Revolution Bikes G Grade was dominated by Graham Dunne, Mark Garner took a well
deserved 2nd place over Stuart Knight who was 3rd and Mike Amy 4th.
A notable feature was the strong performances by junior riders who have continued to
develop well. A vote of thanks again to Peter and Elaine Gavin whose generous
coaching scholarships have enabled Ramblers Cycling Club to contract the services of
Ivar Hopman (Team Coach Ltd.) who has delivered excellent programmes for all his
juniors.
