Ohiti Road Team Time Trial
6/02/2010

REPORT:

A total of 20 teams of various shapes sizes and degrees of planning preparation skill and fitness, lined up for the Waitangi Day Team Time Trial held on the popular Ohiti Road circuit. The day was hot, with a light but significant breeze. A number of riders were seen to be looking longingly at the Pukehaumoamoa school swimming pool. It looked a preferable option to a hard punishing ride over the rolling Matapirau hills. Any time trial is a grovel, but the added difficulty in a team time trial is the responsibility to the team. You can’t slack off and let the team down if you are having a bad day.

Every one looked good on the start line. This was in part due to the excitement of seeing the roll out of Ivan Aplin’s latest toy – a count down timing program prepared for him by Peter Gavin for use in the upcoming Road Cycling National Championships, to be run by Ramblers at the beginning of May. It worked a treat. Well done Peter and Ivan.
Some riders were so fascinated watching the clock count down, that they nearly forgot to go at “zero”. “Can I see it again?”

Most teams held together well, there were no reported crashes or incidents (we seem to be getting the hang of it). There were a few exceptions however. One team (which shall be nameless) broke up in order to sprint the final several hundred metres, leaving their 4th rider straggling behind. Dave Marett will not be impressed with their discipline!

There was a significant toll among the long course teams. The Hub Train was missing from the action, as was the Mackenzie Train. This left the field open for the 'pretenders to the throne' of TTT Kings. It was too much for a number of them. Some teams, which we were expecting to step up, blew up instead.

One solo effort should be mentioned. Richard Brough, with some help from Andrew Townsend for part of the first lap completed the 2 lap course in 1.24.06 (40.21 for the first lap).
