Hawkes Bay is the leading contender to be awarded funding to build the first covered Velodrome in the North Island.
A small team of Ramblers Cycling Club committee members (Ivan Aplin, Roy van Panhuys and Robert Oliver) have been working with the Hastings District Council for around six years to bring this project to fruition. Many challenges have been overcome to get this far.
If successful it will be part of the $55m Regional Sports Park located in Hastings.
The decision regarding the recipient for funding is expected to be made early in 2011. More information can be found on the Sports Park website.
We are delighted that the Sports Park Velodrome has strong support from not only our members, but the wider community. Ramblers would like to particularly thank Hastings Mayor Laurence Yule and Hastings District Council staff.
Stage one of the Sports Park is near completed with the athletics track operating and construction of a 2500 seat grandstand due to open shortly.
Stages two is under way with the construction of the netball, soccer, tennis courts.
Stage three, being the gym sports and the Velodrome, will start as full funding is to hand for each project. If funding for the velodrome was available today we would be in a position to start construction within 3-6 months as planning is at an advanced stage.
The velodrome will be fantastic and will complement Invercargills complex to enable at least one of the track nationals to be held each year in the Bay.
It will also mean all members will have access to improving their own cycling as well as train with the elite.
