Velodrome Update

Hawkes Bay is to get the first covered Velodrome for the North Island as part of a proposed $55m Regional Sports Park.

Ramblers Committee members have been working with the Hastings District Council for nearly 4 years. Stage one of the Parks is under way with the completion of the athletics track and construction of a 2500 seat grandstand has started. . Stages two and three accommodate netball, soccer, tennis, gymsports and of course cycling. These stages will commence as soon as funding is secured.

Newly appointed CEO of the project, Jock Mackintosh said funding is the Park’s biggest challenge

The velodrome will be fantastic and will complement Invercargill’s complex to enable track nationals to alternate between us.

With cycling being such a popular sport in Hawke’s Bay: Ramblers Cycling Club being the 2nd largest Road Cycling Club in NZ with over 330 members and the HB Mountain Bike being the largest, we have an excellent base to start from. With a strong management team, Ramblers Cycling Club is well placed to run the complex and host large events on regular race days we get regularly get 150 riders racing more than many other cycling events.

We also have two Cycling Development Officers to help run the club and various other entities we have operating, all funded locally.

We are delighted that the Sports Park Velodrome has support from Bike NZ, SPARC and local support.

The club has been a leader in many areas to date with the formation of an equipment trust, Bike HB; and working with the developers of a new timing system that is now used at many events around the country including our Saturday races. The velodrome is just another initiative that we have been working on.

The Ramblers Cycling Club would like to thank Lawrence Yule the Major of Hastings, Hastings District Council staff.
